MaryAnne Take Me Out to the Ballgame

30 Jul 2008 July 12, 2008 andnbsp; We made it to down to Joliet, IL and are staying in a small campground at the Empress Casino. Its an interesting little park, with a smattering of greenery and nice large sites. The casino is across the parking lot, and the hotel is adjacent to the campground. The driveway up to the property has really neat landscaping in the form of cards and dice made out of stone and flower arrangements. Quite clever, indeed. Were right near the entrance so we can watch all the comings and goings. I feel like Mrs. Kravitz! andnbsp;andnbsp; After getting settled, we ventured over to my cousin Shelleys house. Shelley, Ramon and Joyce are Uncle Rays Read More

MaryAnne Take Me Out to the Ballgame

30 Jul 2008 July 11, 2008 andnbsp; We left Minneapolis for our return trip to Chicago. The winds were brutal and blew us all over the roadway! Along the way we stopped at the Spam Museum! andnbsp;andnbsp; Thats right, you read it right SPAM. And not the internet kind either! That wonderfully fabulous mystery meat in a can. And actually, after touring the museum, we found out that Spam is actually ground up spiced ham, with NO fillers! It does not contain pig parts and the stuff let over like non-kosher hot dogs. The museum is located in Aurora, MN, home of Hormel Foods, the makers of Spam. The HQ is even located next door to the museum. I Read More

MaryAnne Take Me Out to the Ballgame

30 Jul 2008 July 9 andamp; 10, 2008 andnbsp; July 9, 2008 We decided to go out sightseeing today. OK we went out to stalk Prince. I looked up an alleged address for his house, and went searching. Minneapolis and its surrounding areas are beautiful, and not at all what I expected. The houses were all so huge! I guess with all those multiple birth children one needs something that big, but all the developments were like that. (I looked up one on the internet when we got back home 6 bedroom, 5 baths, finished basement - $325K! Unbelievable!) After 3 hours of searching, and getting lost numerous times, we abandoned the mission. We found the alleged general Read More

MaryAnne Take Me Out to the Ballgame

30 Jul 2008 July 7 and 8, 2008 andnbsp; July 7th I spent the afternoon at the Mall of America in Minneapolis. (Angels singing) Rick came along for lunch, but high-tailed it out of there right afterwards. Just as well, hed just slow me down! I told him Id call for him when I was ready to go. The MOA isnt as big as I thought it would be. The amusement park in the middle is mostly kiddie rides, with a couple that cater to the older kids at heart. andnbsp;andnbsp;andnbsp; Theres even a babysitting service so one can drop them off. There is one really cool kids thing that I wish I could have tried. They put you in Read More

MaryAnne Take Me Out to the Ballgame

30 Jul 2008 July 6, 2008 andnbsp; We got into Minneapolis yesterday. We drove through lots of farm land and dairy farms. Imagine, dairies in Wisconsin! Im loving the whole cheese curds thing! Theyre basically just little balls of cheese, but theyre just the right size for snacking, and come in a plethora of different tastes, like taco or garlic and dill. Mmmm mmmm mmmm! The countryside is also dotted with cheese factories and stores. They really are cheese heads up here! As we came from St. Paul to Minneapolis, there were detour signs for I-35W, the bridge that collapsed last year. What a stark reminder of how precious life is. The signs say the roadway should be opened soon, Read More

MaryAnne Take Me Out to the Ballgame

25 Jul 2008 July 4, 2008 andnbsp; To day we went to the Milwaukee Brewers game. The stadium was easy to get to, and we got there early to walk around the park. andnbsp;andnbsp; OK, we thought we got there early enough, but it seems that in Milwaukee everyone comes early. The parking lot was half full with tailgaters, and the lines were long to get in before the park even opened! A woman that I befriended in line told me that this was the only park that sells more Brats than hot dogs. I believe it since almost every grill in the parking lot had Brats on it. No tri-tips, no steaks or chicken. I didnt even see many Read More

MaryAnne Take Me Out to the Ballgame

25 Jul 2008 July 1, 2008 andnbsp; We did nothing today, and I feel bad about it. I know were on vacation, but I had wanted to go visit my cousin on the other side of town, but Rick doesnt feel so good, and I am a little tired. The campground is about an hour from where she lives. The heat, no the humidity, really wipes me out. Ive lived in the San Joaquin valley, so Im no stranger to heat. Rick too. But the humidity is oppressive! I dont know how people can live in this stuff. I know they get used to it, but no thank you! And I get tired of the noise from the A/C unit Read More

MaryAnne Take Me Out to the Ballgame

25 Jul 2008 July 2 andamp; 3, 2008 andnbsp; July 2nd andnbsp; We left this morning and headed up to Milwaukee. The drive only took about an hour and a half, so it was easy cruising. Were staying at another Jellystone Campground here. andnbsp;andnbsp;andnbsp; I love these places. Maybe its because of all the kids running around. It reminds me what summer is supposed to be about. Hanging out with your friends, swimming, riding bikes and flirting with the boys! Ahhh, the innocence of youth! The campground is packed for the 4th of July, and no wonder this is the place to be with kids, theres a million things to do here! They have a water park, miniature golf, a Read More

MaryAnne Take Me Out to the Ballgame

21 Jul 2008 June 29th and 30th 2008 andnbsp; June 29, 2008 andnbsp; Today would have been my Moms birthday. Happy 82nd bday Mom! I miss you like crazy! Raymond posted a note in the Herald. His words brought me lots of comfort. She was an amazing woman! We had a social engagement today, the wedding reception of my friends Karen and Jason. They actually got married last year, but havent been able to get back to Chicago long enough to do it. (They live in Charlottesville, VA and work at UVA) Karens Mom, Sue, is so nice! I met her when Karen and I worked together in Fresno and she had come out to visit. She was so excited Read More

MaryAnne Take Me Out to the Ballgame

21 Jul 2008 June 27, 2008 andnbsp; OK we left 3 hours early for the White Sox game today, and still got there in second inning! Traffic was a bitch! I dont know how you people in big metro areas do it! What a waste of time spending hours sitting in traffic! Aaarrrggghhh!!! I get so frustrated that yes, even hours later Im still outraged by it. Rick just laughs at me and says to get over it. I cant knowing that it is so easy for people to be sheep and not demand better for society. OK, OK not the forum for this rant! Ill spare you all. I was disappointed we didnt get there early because Read More

MaryAnne Take Me Out to the Ballgame

21 Jul 2008 June 25 and 26, 2008 andnbsp; June 25 andnbsp; We left Detroit today en route to the Chicago area. I had this great idea of staying at a campground in between Chicago and Milwaukee. My reasoning was that since we were going to be in the area for so long, we wouldnt have to move during that time. The logic had one flaw the campground sucks! It looked nice enough when we pulled in, but once we got out to hook up, the mosquitoes came out in droves! OMG Ive never seen so many in one concentrated area. Its hours later and I still feel like theyre buzzing around me! The campground is also very brown and Read More

MaryAnne Take Me Out to the Ballgame

17 Jul 2008 June 24, 2008 andnbsp; We went to the Detroit game today with Linda and Chrissy. What a great field! The entrance is by far the most impressive of all the parks weve been too! I love all the big cats standing guard over the park like gargoyles. andnbsp;andnbsp;andnbsp;andnbsp; Our seats were behind home plate in the second section. The park is newer, and was one of the first retro parks built after Camden Yards in Baltimore. andnbsp;andnbsp;andnbsp; andnbsp;Rick says its the park that ATandamp;T (or whatever the hell its called this year) in San Francisco was modeled after. The Lions stadium, Ford Field, is right next door. andnbsp; The park is open and airy, andnbsp;andnbsp; and has Read More

MaryAnne Take Me Out to the Ballgame

17 Jul 2008 June 20-22, 2008 andnbsp; June 20 andnbsp; We left Madison today en route to Detroit. Now how cool is this? Art and Linda are still trying to sell their place in Michigan, and their kids are still up there going to college, so they came up too! They had a couple of social engagements to attend as well as checking on the house. Linda went first, followed by us, and Art drove up after work. Linda planned on staying through the week, but Art would only be here for the weekend. Its like driving from Monterey to LA, so I guess its not so bad. Its just weird to think of driving through so many states for Read More

MaryAnne Take Me Out to the Ballgame

17 Jul 2008 June 19, 2008 andnbsp; We went and saw the Reds play again tonight. Every time I see the skyline of Cincinnati I would start singing the theme to WKRP in Cincinnati, that old TV show with Dr. Johnny Fever and Les Nesman. Remember? I loved that show! (Thats Les Nesman singing the theme song, ya know?!) We didnt have the suite this time, so we had to sit in the regular seats with the regular people! (I told you we were getting spoiled!) The seats were great (Thanks Art!) and we had a great time. andnbsp;andnbsp;andnbsp; Art and Rick had fun mugging for the camera with the statues. Its like they were both back in high school Read More
