Anxiety Rising
I have less than a month before I climb on the plane to leave my family, friends and everything I know. How am I feeling? Excited. Anxious. Scared. Sad. Hopeful. Distracted. And all at the same time. It seems easier sometimes to focus on the details of what shoes to take, or what kind of cell phone I need to buy rather than think of the enormous change that I am about to face. I am trying to prepare myself for living in a country that has seen such unspeakable tragedy. But can a person really be prepared? I have been watching NFB films, reading articles. I read Romeo Dallaire's book - remarkable! and very helpful in understanding the politics (both Rwandan and UN) - Thanks Tim! Right now I am reading "We Wish to Inform you that Tomorrow We Will be Killed With Our Families" and it is a remarkable book that poses a lot of questions about genocide that are important and I would recommend it to anyone who wants to gain a real understanding of Rwandan history.
So, that's what I've been doing. I'm trying to spend some time with all of my friends and family before I go and I know this month will be a hard one of good-byes and tears but I hope it helps people to know that I'm 100% sure that this is what I want to do. I have been talking about this for... well Carole pointed out that I have been talking about this since we met... um 12 years ago. So I guess it's about time I made the move. I look forward to letters, e-mails, comments.
Thanks to everyone who has sent their support and to those who have chosen to donate money to VSO. Anyone who is still thinking of donating, I would appreciate it immensely! (I haven't hit my target yet) You can do so online by following the link to VSO. Don't forget to mention that the donation is in my name!
